Title
A RESOLUTION CONCERNING STRENGTHENING PRIVACY PROTECTIONS for the purpose of encouraging the Prince George’s County House and Senate Delegations of the Maryland General Assembly to strengthen and support local legislation privacy protections in Prince George’s County for all residents, including but not limited to, teachers, principals, school board members and administration officials.
Background
This proposed resolution places confidentiality protocols to protect all students in Prince George's County. The Maryland TRUST Act is a state law designed to limit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities, ensuring that immigrants can live without fear of unnecessary detention or deportation. The TRUST Act is intended to protect the rights of immigrants including their right to privacy and freedom from unwarranted detention. The proposed law prohibits any individual in the Prince George's Public Schools from using their resources and their office to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in enforcing federal immigration laws unless required by an administrative or criminal warrant. This helps foster trust between immigrant communities and local government, including schools, by ensuring students and their families feel safe seeking public education, without the threat of immigration enforcement action. Furthermore, to further protect children in Prince George's County schools, policies explicitly prohibit targeting school-affiliated individuals -- including but not limited to -- teachers, principals, school board member, or residents from using social media to discuss or disclose any student's actual or perceived immigration status.
